Juice Cleanse Guide

A juice cleanse is a short, planned period of drinking mostly pressed fruit and vegetable juices in place of some or all meals. This guide collects our articles on how cleanses work, how to choose one, and how to prepare, along with an honest look at the research. It is for anyone considering a one-day or multi-day cleanse who wants clear, realistic information first.

What the research says

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that a 2015 review found no compelling research supporting cleanse-style diets for weight management, and that any drop on the scale mostly reflects eating fewer calories and is usually regained (source). NCCIH also reports that the FDA and FTC have taken action against companies making false cleanse claims. We think a cleanse is best seen as a short break from heavily processed food, a way to fit in more fruits and vegetables, and a nudge toward better hydration and routine.

Juice safety matters too. Untreated juice can carry harmful bacteria (source). Meraki juices are Certified HPP, a high pressure process used in place of heat.

Who should talk to a doctor first

  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding (source)
  • People with diabetes (source)
  • People with kidney disease or a history of kidney stones, since leafy greens and beets are high in oxalate (source)
  • Anyone with a history of disordered eating
  • Anyone taking medication, including warfarin, because leafy greens are high in vitamin K (source), or medicines that interact with grapefruit (source)
  • Anyone under 18
  • Older adults
  • People with a weakened immune system (source)
